Why a missing Google Business Profile is costing your Bulawayo business enquiries

Somebody in Bulawayo needs exactly what you sell. They are holding a phone. They type "welding shop near me" or "lodge in Bulawayo" or "borehole drilling Bulawayo" and they look at what comes back. Whatever appears on that screen is the shortlist. Everything not on it may as well not exist.

That screen is built from Google Business Profiles. Not from your Facebook page, not from how long you have traded, not from how good your work is. If your profile is missing, unclaimed or half finished, you are not on the shortlist. Your competitor down the road who spent forty minutes filling in a form is.

The three states a business can be in

No profile at all. You are invisible at the moment of highest intent. Someone who searches "near me" is not browsing. They are about to spend money. You never hear about the enquiry because it never reaches you.

An unclaimed or auto-generated profile. Google sometimes creates a listing from other data, or a customer adds you. Nobody controls it. The hours may be wrong, the phone number may be an old one, the pin may be in the wrong suburb, and anyone can suggest edits. This is worse than nothing, because it actively misinforms people who were trying to find you.

A neglected profile. This is the most common and the most expensive. There is a listing, but it has three blurry photographs from 2021, no service list, no posts, and two unanswered reviews. A person reading that does not conclude "this business is busy". They conclude "this business may have closed" and they tap the next result.

What visitors are actually deciding

In the few seconds someone spends on your listing, they are answering four questions:

  • Are they open right now, and will they answer if I call?
  • Do they actually do the specific thing I need?
  • Where are they, and can I get there?
  • Do other people say they are any good?

A complete profile answers all four before the person has to ask. An empty one leaves them guessing, and people do not gamble with their own money and time when there are three other options on the same screen.

The fields that do the most work

Not all of it matters equally. In our experience the parts that change enquiry volume the most are:

  • The primary category. This is the single biggest factor in which searches you appear for. Most neglected profiles have a vague or wrong one.
  • The service list. Every service written out by name. People search for the specific thing, not the industry.
  • Photographs. Real, current, well lit pictures of the premises, the team and the work. This is the difference between looking active and looking abandoned.
  • Hours, including public holidays. A wrong closing time turns a customer into someone standing outside a locked gate, and that person leaves a review about it.
  • Reviews and your replies. Not just the score. A business that replies, politely, to a complaint reads as one that will take responsibility.

Why so many good businesses skip it

Usually not laziness. It is that the profile feels like admin rather than marketing, so it never reaches the top of the list. There is no invoice attached to it and no deadline, and the cost of not doing it is invisible by definition. You do not see the enquiries you never got.

It is also genuinely fiddly. Verification can stall. Service area businesses without a public address get confusing options. Categories are not obviously named. So it gets started, half completed, and abandoned, which lands you in the third state above.

What to do this week

Search your own business name on Google, from a phone, not your office computer. Then search the thing you sell plus "Bulawayo". Write down honestly what a stranger would conclude from what appears. That is your current marketing, whether you chose it or not.

If the answer is uncomfortable, it is also the cheapest problem you have. Unlike advertising, this is a one time fix with an ongoing benefit, and it costs nothing but attention.

If you would rather not spend a week working out Google's forms, this is the first thing we do for most clients. See how it works or send us a message and we will tell you what state your listing is in before you commit to anything.
